Today on Family Foodie Featured Friday: Holly from Mess Makes Food
Who is Holly: My name is Holly (sometimes known as Miss Messy). I’m 21 and currently in my last year of university in England. I go to the University of Bath, but grew up in Stratford Upon Avon (where Shakespeare was born!). I have always cooked and had a passion for food. I baked with my nan from as soon as I could stand and my Dad always made me try everything. I was that screaming child in the Sushi restaurant who was being told to try the raw fish at least once; I love it now. I’m a pescertarian and have been since I was 9, but apart from that I will eat anything.
I started my food blog back in the summer of 2011; I did it for a while, but never really got to grips with it. I didn’t have a good camera and was taking photos of pretty boring food. Nobody seemed interested in looking at my blog (I don’t blame them!). I got disheartened and gave up. Whilst my blog stopped, I carried on cooking more and more adventurous things, and in March this year I started blogging again. I bought myself a second hand SLR, I went self hosted, I raided DIY stores and charity shops for cheap props and off I went. I haven’t looked back since and love every minute of food blogging.
Being a student blogger can be a challenge, I have no money for fancy ingredients and I have to try and convince people that my blog isn’t just about ramen. As for student accommodation, in my last house and this one, I’ve battled tiny falling apart kitchens to create and present food. I’m convinced I could take a half decent photo on a roller-coaster now! I love a challenge and that’s why being part of the #SundaySupper community is perfect, it’s always challenging me to try new things! I love the people too, it has put me in touch of lovely, friendly, like minded people who I know are there to help out when I have a silly question.
Her favorite #SundaySupper theme so far: My favourite #SundaySupper theme so far has to be the Thanksgiving and Hanukkah one which recently passed. I had so much fun cooking something that I hadn’t tried, let alone cooked before! I made mini Maple Sweet Potato Pies. They turned out perfectly, which is a great ego boost! This theme also gave me the opportunity to focus on what I was thankful for, it turned into quite a soppy post, but sometimes they have to be!
Her most popular #SundaySupper post: My most popular post has to be my Sriracha and Parmesan Fries. I don’t know what made them so popular. I’d originally planned on posting crisps (chips to the Americans), but they went disastrously wrong and so at the last minute I made chips. Luckily they turned out great and people seemed to love them. Must be the Sriracha craze that’s going on! I often make them now, so I’m glad my crisps went wrong!
Fun Fact: I love traveling! In my short 21 years I’ve been to over 25 countries, and I want to keep going. I’m obsessed with America and American food, because everyone I seem to know in the food blogger world is from across the pond, so I want to head there next. My favourite part of travelling is of course the food, and the best food I’ve ever eaten was in Vietnam where I did a cookery course, but also where are I ate a triple decker Filet O Fish from McDonalds, that was delivered to my hotel! I shouldn’t have been so excited about this, but I was.
I couldn’t have less of an idea what I want to do after university, but recently I’ve decided I’m okay with that. All I know is that food is what I want to do, and so I will. Somehow. Until then I’m going to continue blogging away and having fun with my bloggy friends!
