Honored to share #SundaySupper with Cristina Ferrare @cristinacooks

Big Bowl of Love Cookbook Cristina FerrareHave you ever had a cookbook that you just love… the recipes almost became a part of the family?  You know it so well that you start to feel like you have connected with the author.  That’s how I feel about Cristina Ferrare and her recipes.  I was given her Cookbook, Family Entertaining Celebrating the Life of the Home,  shortly after Reis was born and have enjoyed cooking from it ever since.

When I opened the first pages years ago and saw that it was dedicated to her Nony, I immediately fell in love. Cristina honored her Nony, “All her life she has loved her family, friends, cooking and eating.”  It was at a time in my life when I was ready to cook more and share the world with my family through our meals.  I had a one year old, 4 year old and 6 year old and was starting to truly understand the importance of time Around the Family Table.

One of the first recipes I tried was Chicken Piccata.  I can not begin to tell you how many times my family has enjoyed this recipe and continues to crave it since that day.  This recipe has grown up with my family.  I now serve my version over pasta so I add Chicken Broth  to make more sauce.

I was thrilled when Cristina and I recently connected and felt like I was reunited with an old friend.  I called Cristina prior to my Saturday morning ritual, the Farmer’s Market. I love to be inspired by seasonal foods every week and to my surprise, Cristina answered the phone and said, “I am so glad you called before I left for the Saturday Market.” Our conversation continued around our families and mutual love for time Around the Family Table.  Just like her Nony, her love for her family, friends, cooking and eating is apparent when you speak to her.  Cristina was more wonderful in person than I even imaged through her recipes!

I am honored to be breaking bread Around the Family Table with Cristina and to share recipes from her second Cookbook, Big Bowl of Love.  As much as I love the original, Big Bowl of Love has won my heart over.  I was excited to share this fabulous cookbook with the talented Food Bloggers and Recipe Developers from our Sunday Supper Group. They were as excited about Cristina’s recipe style as I was.  These gals are passionate about cooking and when you get a thumbs up from them, you know you’ve hit a home run!

We are honored to add a leaf to our table and share Cristina’s Recipes with you during  #SundaySupper this week.  What do you think of our favorites?

Our recipes will be perfectly paired with wine chosen by Wine Every Day.

Join us this week and break bread us!  We love your recipes, tips and inspiration and love connecting with new friends.  The fun starts at 3pm EST and lasts all afternoon until dinner time and sometimes beyond.  All you have to do is follow the hashtag #sundaysupper on twitter or follow along on TweetChat.  There is always room Around the Family Table for you.

Mother’s Day Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie n’ Oreo Fudge Brownie #cookformom #SundaySupper

You have no idea how much I am  enjoying featuring some of my favorite Dad’s this week for Mother’s Day.  So many wonderful memories came back to me thinking about how I met these great men. One person comes to mind when I think …. loving husband, great father, all around awesome guy!  @fsutoby and I met on twitter when I was a total twitter newbie and he invited me to my first ever Tweetup.  Without knowing what to expect, I said yes.

Let me tell you, this was no ordinary Tweetup, this was to this day, the best tweetup I have ever been invited to participate in. Not only will I say so, Reis and Riley still talk about that awesome day!  Toby’s client, Dunkin Donuts, sponsored a delicious day of donuts, sandwiches, flatbread, coffee, iced drinks and…. Kennedy Space Center.  My boys had an absolute blast and so did I.  We had lunch with a for real astronaut!

It was so well done, that I knew immediately that I would be wise to pay attention to  Toby’s Social Media Strategies.  This guy gets Social Media, PR and understands how to connect Brands and their Consumers. Speaking of well done… Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza is a must try. I am so glad Toby has introduced me to their Pizza, wings and my oh my…. the best eggplant I have ever tasted.  I love eggplant and when I tell you this is the best… I am not kidding!  This is a talented restaurant that welcomes you and your family with great hospitality and delicious food.  Everything Toby touches is well done.

I have had the honor of breaking bread with Toby and his lovely wife @sleeeping and the infamous Frick and Frack.   You must follow @fsutoby to hear about all the adventures of Frick and Frack… they are the best and will keep you in stitches!

I love that Toby and his family are Around the Family Table this Sunday Supper! Happy Mother’s Day Sarah. Here is his post and recipe:

I am blessed to have known my wife Sara (@sleeeping) for almost 14 years and married to her for almost 11.  She has been a great mom to our wonderful son and daughter, Bailey (Frick, 8) and Riley (Frack, 4).  She is a terrific cook and recently stumbled upon a recipe that has all three of us drooling every time she brings it to our kitchen table.

It’s All About Relationships this Mother’s Day #SundaySupper

Family Around the Family Table on Mother's DayAs you know, this week I am featuring Dad’s “in the kitchen” for Mother’s Day.  I have had the honor of meeting some amazing men through Social Media that have left an impression on me.  One of those amazing Dad’s is Ted Rubin.  Sometime in 2010 I noticed  #RonR in my twitter stream, time and time again.  I kept wondering what is #RonR?  Finally I got up the nerve to tweet out… Can someone tell me what is #RonR?  That is when I first discovered Ted and learned the term ROR: Return on Relationship™, is the basis for his philosophy, it’s all about Relationships!  I  was immediately intrigued. Ted was speaking a language that I love.

I have learned so much from following Ted. I love that he shares great stories about his daughters, lessons in social media, his point of view on life and his trips through his blog, Straight Talk.  I enjoy it so much that I asked him to be in my tribe on Triberr and was thrilled when he agreed.  My audience has grown to love and look forward to Ted’s posts as much as I do … and that is what Social Media is all about engaging, sharing and Return on Relationships!

There is one minor bone that I have to pick with Mr. Rubin…. I have got to get him cooking Around the Family Table with his girls!  I’m on a mission to turn him into a Foodie!  What should we start with Ted? Latkes, Brisket, Chicken Soup? You name it!

I am honored to have Ted doing a guest post for me today and love the story he has shared, especially of his grandparents.  I do believe in Soul Mates and this story touched my heart:

Mother’s Day was always a special day in my family. Not so much for “honoring” Mom, but more as an extended family day when we all gathered at our house to celebrate our connection, shared past, all the children, and hopes for the future.

When I was young and there was still a deeper connection to a great deal of our extended family we had many more get-togethers and a lot of them were at our house. Many of my parent’s aunts, uncles and older cousins were immigrants from Eastern Europe. Spending time together around almost every holiday imaginable was a part of their culture and a way for them to be with those with whom they were most comfortable… so family togetherness was a common occurrence. As younger relatives relocated and later generations became more acclimated, time together diminished considerably so the “special” holidays became more important. Different members of the extended family had holidays hosted at their homes and Mother’s Day became ours.

I can remember my Mom being so stressed out wanting everything to be perfect that I was always the “bad” son, and being the middle of three boys made this a regular occurrence, because I was either washing the car too close to when guests were due to arrive or any number of other “horrible” deeds :-)

Even when at college, my brothers and I were expected to be home for this occasion and if not we better be in some foreign country with no ability to get home for a reasonable airfare. Every year there would be a big family photo and at some point we started the custom of including a photo of any of the children who could not attend. This was not a badge of honor, but a way to have it always remembered for the future that we could not make the effort to be there… oh, yes, guilt is a very big part of my Jewish heritage. I can laugh about it now, but it was not a laughing matter then… and I have done all I can to eradicate that from the relationship I have with my girls.

We are going to have to pass on the recipe because as I tell everyone I eat with when they are picking a restaurant… I am the easiest person in the world to feed, as I will eat anything and even like cafeteria food. Why you may ask… because truth be told my Mom was the worst cook in America. Thank goodness she never steps near a computer so she will never see this post. But my Nanny, my Dad’s mother… was the most awesome cook and I can still smell and taste her food just by closing my eyes and thinking about her… latkes, brisket, chicken soup, matzo balls, and all sorts of soups and specialties that were all her own.

I was blessed with the most amazing grandparents, my Nanny and Poppy, and could write an entire post about them. The very short version is that they both escaped Poland right before World War II and married my other grandparents. I know you are now confused. At the age of 47 my father’s father died. At the age of 54 my mother’s mother died. Just a few short years later my father’s mother married my mother’s father… and there a life-long romance was born. Although personally I have a hard time with the concept of soul-mates… they were as close as you could possibly come. They were married to each other for longer than they were married to my parents other parents… and they most certainly were each other’s reason for living well into their 90′s. My Poppy called my Nanny his bodyguard and would go nowhere without her. They adored each other and were the very best grandparents a child could ever have. Enough said.

So… Mother’s day had a lot of meaning for me and writing this has brought a tear to my eye and a big smile to my face. Thank you so much Isabel for asking me to be a part of your Mother’s Day celebration. I truly miss that time from my past.

Ted is a leading social marketing strategist and in 2009 started using the term ROR: Return on Relationship™... a concept he believes is the cornerstone for building an engaged multi-million member database, many of whom are vocal advocates for the brand, like the one he built for e.l.f. Cosmetics as the Chief Marketing Officer between 2008 and 2010, and the one being built for the new updated OpenSky where Ted was Chief Social Marketing Officer until the end of April. He is currently the Chief Social Marketing Officer at Collective Bias but will tell you, the most important job he has is being a Dad to two beautiful girls.

Kinda Yucky Kinda Yummy Mother’s Day #SundaySupper

Mediterranean Turkey Burger RecipeAnyone who has participated in  #SundaySupper knows how heated it can get when everyone is excited and tweeting about their meals.  I try hard to comment on every tweet and post every week but sometimes it is just impossible to keep up.  Every once in a while, we get a #SundaySupper newbie that just knows how to kick it up a notch in order to get everyone’s attention..

Chris Baccus, aka @cbaccus, caught my attention during one of our busy #SundaySupper events.  He engaged and was commenting on what people were cooking and at the end he tweeted #FTW and a recipe.  I have to share, I had no idea what #FTW was and thinking it was a new twitter term, I googled it.  Ahhhh, I was enlightened, FTW = For the Win!  I loved it and that’s when I came across his awesome blog, Sustainable Dad. Sustainable in the kitchen, working on it on the Road… and immediately loved it.

What’s better than a Dad who loves to blog about his adventures with his twin boys!   One of the first posts that I read, put a smile on my face.  It was a post about Trying New Food and Instant Feed Back from the little guys and it reminded me so much of my boys when they were younger.

  1. Yummy: Thumbs up.
  2. Yucky: Thumbs down.
  3. Kinda Yummy, Kinda Yucky: One thumb up and the other thumb down. This one can mean several things. They like a flavor in the food, but not all the flavors. Or they like all the flavors but not the texture.

My kids still rate every meal that we enjoy Around the Family Table and it all began when they were toddlers and were told they had to take a No Thank you Bite.  It is those traditions that are the beginning of the memories that will last a lifetime.

I have enjoyed Chris’s Blog ever since and am honored that he joins us during Sunday Supper.  Let me tell you… the meals that he shares with us are fabulous!  This Dad can Rock Out in the kitchen!

Oh, and I can’t forget to mention that if you are ever looking for Gas Station Tacos, Chris has great recommendations on his other blog, Gas Station Tacos.  Seriously without a great recommendations, it could turn into one of those Kinda Yucky Kinda Yummy situations.

Today he is sharing his Mother’s Day Mediterranean Turkey Burgers Recipe…according to his boys, this may be another of his Kinda Yucky, Kinda Yummy Recipe or maybe just Yucky all together.

Here is Chris’s Post:

With a forecast temperature of 81 on Mother’s Day in Dallas, it is time for some grilling.
One of my wife’s favorite summer meals is this easy and flavorful turkey burger that combines Mediterranean spices and feta cheese. Each burger is served in a pita with mixed salad greens and a generous spoonful of Tzatiki dressing.  I’ll pair this with some fresh diced watermelon also with feta cheese, chiffon basil leaves and some balsamic vinegar.
Sadly, our twin 6 year old boys will eat something else as they just haven’t opened up to eating meat, except Niman Ranch ham and bacon.  While we enjoy some great tasting burgers, the kids will most likely enjoy some ham and cheese sandwiches.  Perhaps next year they can join mom in enjoying this summer recipe.

Dad’s are in the kitchen for #SundaySupper on Mother’s Day

Meatballs RecipeMother’s Day is this week and it just wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t give Mom’s the day off. I have asked some special Dad’s to step in and take over Sunday Supper this week.  I am honored to have connected with some amazing Dad’s through Social Media. This Mother’s Day I am featuring these men that I admire, have touched my heart, that are great Dad’s and are just awesome in the kitchen. I kid you not, these boys can cook!

The first Dad I am featuring is Jim Joseph.  Without realizing it, Jim helped me find my Voice.  I know, some of you are thinking…. why did he do that?  One evening back in August or September, after chatting on Twitter, Jim sent me a tweet that said “I love what you stand for and would love for you to do a guest post for me.”

I was a new blogger and didn’t  realize that anyone was listening to me, never mind actually reading my blog.  I couldn’t believe that someone would actually want me to do a guest post?  I am still honored and thankful that Jim gave me the encouragement that I needed to continue with Family Foodie.

Honestly, I haven’t stopped learning from Jim since that day.  I have watched many webinars that he has hosted and learned that I am a Brand.  Did you know that? I am a Brand!  Are you sure Jim?  There are days that I still question this. But one thing I have learned, if Jim tells me I am a Brand, then I must be. When I was feeling guilty about occasionally eating out because now that I am a Brand that promotes eating Around the Family Table… Jim is the one who reassured me that the Family Table can be anywhere the only ingredient needed is love!

Jim is an absolute wealth of information on Marketing, Branding and delivering the experience that our audience is craving. His books The Experience Effect and The Experience Effect for Small Businesses are must reads.  And if you ever have a chance to attend one of his webinars, do so! You won’t regret it!

Today, I am honored that our roles are reversed. Jim has agreed to do a guest post for me. I can’t wait to try his Meatball Recipe and love that we love some of the same brands!  Here is Jim’s Mother’s Day  Post:

 A Dad’s Mother’s Day
To be completely honest, as a kid I never really paid that much attention to Mother’s Day.  Like most kids, I’d scramble at the last minute to get my Mother a gift and then try to make it look like I had it planned all along.  Just being honest. But when I had my own kids, I suddenly felt an obligation to give some ceremony around Mother’s Day.  I didn’t worry as much about Father’s Day truthfully, but Mother’s Day was a holiday where I felt a responsibility to perform.

Maybe it was because I was a divorced Dad and for awhile a single Dad to boot, so I felt a real need to acknowledge the holiday.  There were several years early on where I was the entertainer on that day, and some years I was even the “Mother”.  So I’ve had as much a vested interest in Mother’s Day as any other Mother.

One year in particular, my kids Mom was out of the country, so I was celebrating Mother’s Day in my home.  I decided to make spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, a true comfort food for me and I was in need of some comfort that day.

I planned a bunch of activities to keep us busy and the kids had a ball that day – it turned out to be a record day for me with them.  And they loved my dinner.  When I was tucking them in that Mother’s Day night, my daughter asked me if we could celebrate Mother’s Day every week.  What a great feeling for a Dad trying to make sure my kids celebrated the day appropriately.

Now I’ve never told anyone this before, but one of my favorite family traditions was born at that very moment … on Mother’s Day when my kids were with me, their Dad.

From that moment and now every Sunday night without fail we have spaghetti and meatballs for dinner.  It’s a ritual that both celebrates the weekend together and prepares for the week ahead.  If we are home, we make them home made – and try all sorts of varieties like beef, sirloin, turkey, lamb, veggie and even salmon.  If we are out, we go to a restaurant that serves our favorite.  When ever I travel, I make sure I check with the locals to help me find a place for Sunday night. So what was born out of a need to create a celebratory Mother’s Day has become a weekly tradition for my family. I think that’s more than appropriate coming from dear ‘ole Dad.Although we have several meatball recipes, this is my favorite, compiled from a few variations that ended up being sheer perfection IMHO.

That’s my #SundaySupper weekly experience!

Chicken Bruschetta Recipe #SundaySupper

bruschetta chicken recipeI love waking up on Saturday morning and heading out towards the Farmer’s Market.  It is so much fun to walk around, taste new items and see what’s in season.   Most of all, I love talking to all the merchants and hearing about what inspires them.

Reis loves joining me and the Farmer’s Market has become a tradition that we look forward to.  This week the tomatoes looked absolutely amazing and Reis decided we must try making Bruschetta! Reis worked on the Bruschetta and I worked on Chicken.  What a wonderful afternoon we had Around the Family Table creating a new Recipe.

Tilapia Caramelized Onions Tomatoes and Goat Cheese #SundaySupper

Tilapia Caramelized Onions Tomato and Goat CheeseAfter a busy week, sometimes it is those dishes that are so simple that are the most rewarding.  This dish is one of them.  I made this for Sunday Supper but honestly this Tilapia with caramelized onions, tomatoes, and goat cheese is perfect for a weeknight meal.  It cooks very quickly and is absolutely delicious!

I like to serve with sliced baked potato sprinkled with olive oil and sea salt and a garden salad.
